A good jacket is an investment, and with the right care it can look great for many seasons. Most damage comes from washing too often or drying too fast. Here's how to keep your jacket in top shape.
1. Always read the care label first
Every jacket is different. The care label tells you the right temperature, whether it can go in the dryer and if it needs special treatment. When in doubt, follow the label over any general advice.
2. Wash less, spot-clean more
Jackets rarely need a full wash. For small marks, use a damp cloth with a little mild soap and gently dab the area. Washing too often can wear out fabrics and reduce the warmth of padding.
3. Wash padded jackets the right way
When your padded jacket does need a wash, close all zips, turn it inside out and use a gentle cycle at a low temperature with a mild detergent. Skip the fabric softener: it can clump the filling and reduce insulation.
4. Dry slowly and evenly
Let your jacket dry flat or on a wide hanger, away from radiators and direct heat. If the care label allows tumble drying, use a low heat setting and add a couple of clean tennis balls to help the padding stay evenly spread.
5. Store it properly
At the end of the season, make sure your jacket is clean and completely dry before you put it away. Hang it on a sturdy hanger in a cool, dry place, and avoid compressing padded jackets for long periods.
