Autumn in the UK means cold mornings, mild afternoons and the occasional surprise shower. The secret to staying comfortable all day isn't one heavy coat, it's smart layering. Here's how to do it without looking like you've thrown on everything you own.
The three-layer rule
Think in three layers: a base layer (a T-shirt or shirt), a mid layer (a knit, sweatshirt or gilet) and an outer layer (a jacket). Each layer should be easy to take off and carry, so you can adjust as the day changes.
Start thin, end structured
Keep your thinnest layers closest to your body and your most structured piece on the outside. A soft cotton tee under a fine-knit jumper under a padded jacket looks clean and feels comfortable. Avoid putting a thick hoodie under a slim jacket: it will pull and look bulky.
Play with lengths
Layering looks best when you can see a little of each piece. A shirt collar above a crewneck, or a knit hem just below a short jacket, adds depth to an outfit without any extra effort.
Keep colours simple
Choose two or three colours that work together, such as navy, grey and white, or khaki, black and cream. A neutral base makes layering look intentional rather than accidental.
Don't forget the gilet
A gilet is the ultimate layering piece: it adds warmth to your core without restricting your arms, and it works over a shirt, a knit or under a coat. If you're building an autumn wardrobe, it's one of the most versatile pieces you can own.
